James Gray Receives Honorary Cinema Chair at FICM 2026 Ceremony

The Morelia International Film Festival turned a simple seat into cinematic royalty when James Gray collected his spot in the 24th edition. His films have long mixed tension, flawed humans and sharp dialogue, so the organizers decided the best tribute was a permanent chair with his name on it, ready for future generations to wonder why it feels heavier than expected.

During the special screening of Paper Tiger, Alejandro Ramírez handed over the Premio a la Excelencia Artística. The movie, starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller, had already premiered at Cannes 2026 and follows two brothers tangled with the Russian mafia. Ramírez praised Gray’s talent for locating poetry inside brutal streets. Gray, accepting the heavy trophy, joked that filmmakers often question whether their work matters to anyone, then added that in film school the directors who talked the longest usually made the worst movies.

Following tradition, the crew unveiled the engraved chair inside a downtown Morelia cinema complex. Gray quipped he would now sit there offering running commentary on every screening. Students and cinephiles cheered the gesture, imagining future afternoons where the director might actually return to deliver unfiltered notes on whatever plays next.

The ritual proves that even in an era of endless streaming, a physical chair in Morelia still carries more weight than any algorithm.
