The 24th FICM kicked off on Friday, October 16, 2026, under a polite Michoacán drizzle that refused to ruin anyone’s mascara. Fans packed the historic center of Morelia to watch celebrities arrive like royalty who had forgotten their umbrellas but remembered their smiles. Marco Antonio Solís, known as El Buki, received a roar so loud it briefly challenged the rain for volume, while Diego Boneta and content creator Javier Ibarreche triggered the kind of screams usually reserved for lottery winners.
Jonás Cuarón’s *Campeón Gabacho* opened the festival, telling the story of Liborio, played by Juan Daniel García Treviño. The young migrant heads toward New York, dodging cultural landmines, romantic detours and fistfights that would make a boxing gym jealous. Alfonso Cuarón, Nicolás Celis and Pimienta Films produced the film, which already won the audience award at SXSW 2026. The plot turns border crossing into an absurd obstacle course where love and punches arrive in equal measure.
Expected guests include Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Gael García Bernal. Screenings run through October 25 both in person and on nuestrocine.mx, featuring the official Mexican feature competition. The drizzle eventually surrendered, leaving the red carpet glistening like a freshly polished absurdity. Ten days of cinema now unfold across Morelia’s stone streets, proving that even stubborn rain cannot outshine a determined crowd or a story willing to fight its way forward.
